Margot Robbie Gets Intense in Tonya Harding’s Infamous Scandal. Directed by Craig Gillespie, I, Tonya makes a tragicomedy out of an old news event.
Margot Robbie is the legendary figure skater Tonya Harding in the I, Tonya, a dark comedy movie based on Tonya Harding’s infamous scandal in 1990s, when her husband trying to sabotage her rival by breaking her rival’s leg that eventually lead to Harding being stripped of her national title and banned for life from the figure skating world.
The movie itself explores the reality of Harding’s journey after the incident and how it affects her career in the Olympic figure skating. With Margot Robbie in the tittle role, Craig Gillespie (known as the director of Lars and The Real Girl) as the Director set out to show side of Harding that nobody knew. In the hands of Gillespie and writer Steven Rogers, I, Tonya proves to be smart, funny and engaging with the best line up of supporting actors portraying main people in Harding’s life such as Allison Janney as Harding’s mom and Sebastian Stan as Harding’s husband who are showing different perspectives of the unfortunate events.
Margot Robbie plays a major roles in this movie, one of the things that helped Robbie portraying Harding without prejudice was that she didn’t research about the incident before she met Tonya Harding in person and then reading the script. She said, “It was actually better way to approach her with fresh eyes, she is actually incredibly kind.” The reality is now Harding had a very hard life. Robbie also declares that American people want someone to love and someone to hate, and they want it easy. As the voice over continues in the trailers, “The haters always say ‘Tonya, tell the truth.” There’s no such thing as truth.”
America’s relationship to its own news is less of a search for information and more like an unhealthy sort of fandom, consumed with theories and scandals and villains. Tonya Harding was both lucky and unlucky enough to have triple-axeled her way into that spotlight.
I, Tonya hits theatre on December 2018, meanwhile watch the trailer below:
