The whole thing about Ellery Resort 2016 is reminiscent of rock ‘n’ roll in the 60s and 70s, but not in an androgynous way but in a feminine, elegant way.
Kym Ellery found her resort muse in Anita Pallenberg, the actress, model and love interest of two Rolling Stones members, Keith Richards and Brian Jones. The whole thing is reminiscent of rock ‘n’ roll in the 60s and 70s, but not in an androgynous Saint Laurent way but in a feminine, elegant way. A ’70s rock-chick vibe was filtered through the designer’s vocabulary of soft tailoring and staple pieces with a sculptural flourish. Ellery also kept things fresh by dipping into one of the lesser-known aspects of the Pallenberg mythos: her interest in the witchcraft, black magic specifically.
Ellery is no stranger to a flared trouser or a bell sleeve, but this collection honours both styles loyally. Additionally, the black, blue, red and white colour palette and fabrication choices of silk and velvet work to create a kind of witchy vibe. It wouldn’t be Ellery without signature volume and ruffle detailing but this time she gave her tops balloon sleeves and updated her trousers with white contrast stitching and prints done in sheer silk chiffon. Upon learning from her muse, this aesthetic made perfect sense. (Text Teuku Ajie)
